A Report on a Workshop at the Faculty of Engineering Entitled: “Intellectual Property Rights: Creativity and Legislation”
In celebration of World Intellectual Property Day, which comes on the date of April 26 each year, the Faculty of Engineering, Mansoura University, today, Tuesday, May 2, 2023, organized a workshop entitled “Intellectual Property Rights: Creativity and Legislation” in Prof. Dr. Rashad El Badrawy’s Conference Hall.
The workshop was held under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Sherif Khater, President of the University, and Prof. Dr. Ashraf Tariq Hafez, Vice President of the University for Postgraduate Studies and Research, led by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Azim, Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Dr. Sherif El-Badawy, Vice-Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research, supervised by Prof. Dr. Sahar Sedky, Vice-Dean for Community service and environmental development, follow-up and coordination, Prof. Dr. Abeer Tawakul, Director of the Medical Engineering Program for Postgraduate Studies, organized by Dr. Ahmed Hussein, Director of the Scientific Research Support Unit and the presence of a group of heads of scientific departments, program directors, faculty members and the supporting staff.
The activities of the workshop began with the National Anthem.Then Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Azim delivered his speech in which he welcomed, Prof. Dr. Sherif Khater, President of Mansoura University, Prof. Dr. Ashraf Tariq Hafez, Vice President of the University for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and all the attendees. His Excellency mentioned that the month of April has a special reality. On April 25, 1974, the Republican Decree was issued to convert the Higher Industrial Institute into the Faculty of Engineering. The World Intellectual Property Day is also celebrated on April 26 each year. His Excellency stressed that ideas and innovations have private property that must be protected and respected. The Faculty of Engineering is a fertile ground for the production of ideas, its emphasis is to support ideas and achievements, not people.
Then Prof. Dr. Ashraf Hafez, Vice President of the University for Postgraduate Studies and Research, spoke, where he expressed appreciation and admiration for the huge leap that occurred in the Faculty of Engineering, as it is the first compared to the university’s faculties in terms of achievements, the number of researches and their arrangement in the classifications. He also stressed the need to work to protect human rights. Intellectual property and preserving the rights of its owners, in order to encourage, support and motivate them.
Prof. Dr. Sherif Khater, President of the University, addressed all the attendees, expressing his thanks to the Faculty of Engineering, congratulating the faculty for winning the first place award in the government excellence award at the level of public universities, in addition to obtaining three ISO certificates. The faculty is going to celebrate its golden jubilee on May 8, 2023. The second engineering forum of the faculty coincides with the golden jubilee ceremony.
His Excellency, President of Mansoura University, confirmed that Mansoura University plays a fundamental and effective role in the era of the knowledge economy, which depends on research and scientific innovations, as Mansoura University has distinguished infrastructure and distinguished faculty members, therefore it is keen to invest all this by supporting scientific research and patenting it in order to protect their intellectual production and protect their intellectual rights.
Prof. Dr. Amr Gabr, Director of the Intellectual Property and Patents Office at the University, spoke, where he clarified the concept of intellectual property, conditions and steps for applying for obtaining intellectual property, the timing of applying for obtaining intellectual property must be before publication, and what rights are granted after registration Patent, he also gave some ideas that have been patented, what is the cost of obtaining a patent, and what is the reward for obtaining a patent, whether locally or internationally, then he explained what the World Intellectual Property Organization is and what its role is.
In the end, Dr. Mona Abu Bakr Hassan, Assistant Professor of Civil Law at the Faculty of Law, spoke about the details of the legal aspects of protecting intellectual property rights in accordance with Law 82 of 2022.
The workshop ended at about 2:30 in the afternoon.
