A Report on the Symposium Entitled: “Smart Cities: an Introduction to Sustainable Urban Development”
The Faculty of Engineering organized a symposium entitled: “Introduction to the Smart Cities: an Introduction to Sustainable Urban Development” on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, in Prof. Dr. Al-Saeed Ashour, hall in the presence of a number of those interested in the field of urban and environmental development, and a number of faculty members, assisting staff, students, and members of the faculty’s administrative staff.
The symposium was held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Sherif Khater, President of the University, the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Azim, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sherif Al-Badawi, Interim Dean of the Faculty and coordination of Prof. Dr. Amira Yasin Heikal, Vice dean for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs. The presenters were Prof. Dr. Samah Hafez, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Commerce for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Dina Abu Al-Ela, Head of the Sociology Department at the Faculty of Arts.
The activities began with a speech by Prof. Dr. Amira Yasin, in which she welcomed the attendees, she mentioned that Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs Sector at the faculty of engineering has always and forever adopted the organization and implementation of all activities that serve environmental and social projects for the sake of a safe and clean life to achieve a better future for society and for our students and to provide our role and mission in this life.
Prof. Dr. Samah explained a number of topics, the most important of which are: clarifying the concept and meaning of fourth generation cities, the meaning of sustainability, how to achieve sustainable urban development through fourth generation cities, what are the sources of energy, and the role of technology and innovation in building these cities, clarifying areas in which technology is applied in these cities, such as health, education, transportation, water, and waste, clarifying the quality of life in these cities after applying technology in them.
Then Prof. Dina Abu El-Ela discussed several topics, the most important of which are: clarifying Egypt’s Vision 2023 through the concept of sustainability, what are the sources of sustainability, the concept of the green university and the smart university, the role of interest and support from the state in achieving sustainable urban development in those cities.
A discussion took place, where the students asked questions about sustainability and smart cities. It was also noted that in order to spread and activate the concept of sustainability, a sustainability office was established at the university. The students were also urged that the concept of sustainability should be applied in some of their projects, such as designing an energy-powered car
using solar or wind energy.
